One US Citizenship, like new! No reserve!
Would you auction off your citizenship? If you’re born within our borders or on a military base you’re given US citizenship with little question. And if you’re an immigrant it was a matter of a lottery, rudimentary background checks, paperwork, tests, some money, and some years. What if you’ve decided your citizenship doesn’t add value to you anymore? Would you sell it and move out of the country? Would you try to acquire dual-citizenship through the market, say get that UK citizenship you always wanted?
That is the interesting question pondered by EconLog based on this quirky article.
I find this idea intriguing , especially since it treats citizenship are property and not just rights granted you. And could it be used by corporations willing to underwrite your citizenship in another country for purposes of access? Would UK companies be willing to fund US citizenships and housing for easier access to ITAR restricted work packages? Or just as a mechanism to counter shortages of qualified US personnel? (I’m thinking legitimate enterprise here, the illegitimate possibilities exist regardless.)
For the record my citizenship isn't remotely up for sale..
Implement this in SimCity and see what happens. Cheers, -Ali
